“The Iles family, Philip, his wife Sarah and son Russell, only bought this property in 1998 but have already made their mark……Three cuvées of red wine and two of white are being made. The reds are L’Enclos de Château Lezongars, an assemblage of their best parcels of Merlot and Cabernet, which has 20 per cent new oak, including some American oak. I found the ’99 supple and elegant with rich tannins and finish. The regular Lezongars has a little more Merlot and the ’99 was really better than the ’98, with real character and length. Finally Château de Roques is designed for early drinking and, as with the normal cuvée, has 60% Merlot. The ’99 showed pleasingly mellow, welcoming fruit. The white is quite Sauvignon in style, intense and full flavoured. Clearly, the property is going places.” |
